This project is part of a four-part project adapting a topic to various forms of media. So far I have created a podcast and an Instagram account.

My topic is movie directors. I had a hard time at first coming with an app that was a unique experience from my other projects while keeping in line with my publishing strategy. I ended up with Curated an app that helps you find your next favorite movie. Get films curated by people from the film industry directors, actors, or news outlets. Who better to get movie suggestions from the best from inside the industry?

Audience/Strategy

This app is for film lovers looking for something good to watch, to see what people in the industry are loving, and to see film rankings. Curated would also tie into my podcast and social media account. In my other projects, each week featured a different director. This director would also be featured on Curated. They could curate a list, and other curators could make lists about them or their movies.

Design Process

Sketches

Once I got the idea for my app I got to sketching. This helped me to get the basic structure of my design. I knew I wanted the featured films to be interconnected. For example, when you go to a film’s page it shows all the lists that that film is on.

Surface Comps

This stage probably took the longest. After creating the main pages I had to go through and make sure everything was consistent from page to page. The most time-consuming thing was creating a page for each film. I found TMDb super helpful as a one-stop-shop for all the information I would need for a film.

Prototype

Lot’s of links!

This stage showed a lot of little errors in the design that I had not noticed. I also realized that I had forgotten to design elements essential to the navigation. I had forgotten to include back arrows once you go into a subpage of the app. Also smaller things like the bottom navigation not being fixed.

Prototype

Conclusion

I enjoyed doing the research and creating the content because I love the subject. I wanted to go more in-depth and have more curators and lists. But because of time constraints just showed the core functions and experience of the app. Overall this was a really fun project that was great practice in adapting content to different mediums.
